Short Answer

Use a Rock Solid counter build when you can name the incoming attack before it lands. Rock Solid is strongest as a planned answer to a repeatable hit, not as a replacement for dodging every scary animation.

Target Player State

This build is for pattern learners who are tired of backing away from the same heavy swing, slam, or charge. It works best after one or two scouting attempts, when you know which attack is predictable and which follow-up window the counter creates.

Build Path

  • Alteration: equip Rock Solid only when the fight has a clear counter target.
  • Stance: use Smash for fast cashouts after the counter, or Thrust if the boss rebounds away.
  • Spells: keep Immobilize as a second planned window, not as a panic overlap.
  • Spirit: pick a quick punish Spirit that lands after the counter or after Immobilize.
  • Gear: value stamina and damage reduction; failed counters still need recovery room.
  • Transformation: save for phases where counter timing is too risky but survival still matters.

If you are not sure what to counter, keep Cloud Step instead. A reset tool is stronger than a counter spell with no assigned job.

Rotation

Scout the boss until you can say, “This is the hit I counter.” Enter the fight normally, dodge everything else, then use Rock Solid on that one attack. After the counter, land a short confirmed punish, spend Focus only if the boss is still committed, then reset.

A good Rock Solid loop is quiet. It may counter one attack per phase and ignore five others. The build gets worse when you chase style points and start trying to parry every animation.

Strong Matchups

Rock Solid is strong against bosses with clear heavy tells, single-hit finishers, or repeated charges that leave recovery. It can also help players who dodge too early, because the counter timing forces them to wait for the real impact.

It is weak against delayed multi-hit strings, grabs, status pools, flying pressure, and attacks where the boss immediately relocates. In those fights, Cloud Step, Pillar, or a simpler dodge plan may be safer.

When To Swap Away

Swap away if you cannot identify a reliable counter target after several attempts. Also swap if the attack you counter does not create a useful follow-up. Rock Solid must convert into safety, damage, or rhythm control; if it only prevents one hit and leaves you trapped, it is not solving the matchup.

Recovery Plan

If the counter is early, stop watching the weapon wind-up and watch the final body movement. If it is late, use Rock Solid on a slower attack first. If the counter succeeds but you get hit afterward, shorten the punish or spend Spirit immediately after the counter. If the whole fight becomes counter tunnel vision, return to Cloud Step and rebuild from ordinary dodging.
