Short Answer
Use spells to create control, safety, or a reset. Use Spirits to convert a confirmed opening into damage, stagger, defense, or utility. Use transformations to carry a planned phase with a separate meter and moveset.
Do not stack all three on the first decent opening unless that opening is the fight’s real win condition. Most failed resource plans come from spending every tool before the hard phase starts.
The Three Jobs
Spells answer the question: “How do I create or survive the moment?”
Examples: Immobilize to freeze a punish window, Cloud Step to break pressure, Rock Solid to counter a readable hit, Ring of Fire to stabilize a position, or another spell that creates a specific plan.
Spirits answer the question: “What do I do with the moment?”
A Spirit skill is strongest after the boss is controlled, staggered, recovering, or locked into a pattern you understand. Some Spirits are burst tools, some interrupt, some reposition, and some provide passive support. The point is conversion.
Transformations answer the question: “Can I run a whole phase under a different risk budget?”
A transformation gives you a planned stretch of pressure or safety. It is not just a bigger Spirit attack. It changes how you move, attack, and absorb risk for a limited window.
Choosing The Right Tool
Pick by problem:
- Need an opening: spell first.
- Need to escape a bad string: Cloud Step or another defensive spell.
- Need to punish a stagger: Spirit first.
- Need a long phase plan: transformation.
- Need status or route stability: gourd, medicine, armor, or Curio before burst.
- Need one final push after clean attempts: combine tools in a planned order.
If you are not sure which problem you have, do a scouting attempt with fewer resources. Spending more will hide the lesson.
Layering Resources
A clean resource chain looks like this:
- Dodge or position until the boss gives a known sequence.
- Cast the spell assigned to that sequence.
- Use one charged punish or Spirit skill while the opening is real.
- Save transformation for the phase that normally breaks the run.
- Heal only after the resource window ends and the boss resets.
A messy chain looks like this: cast because mana is full, Spirit because the button is ready, transform because health is low, then drink while the boss is attacking. That spends resources without jobs.
When Not To Use Each One
Do not cast spells when the boss is immune, airborne beyond reach, mid-grab, or already leaving the window.
Do not use a Spirit when the recovery is unsafe, the target is moving away, or you need Qi for a later planned interrupt.
Do not transform because of panic at low health. Transform before the phase you want to control, with enough space to use the new moveset.
Common Mistakes
- Treating Spirits and transformations as the same resource.
- Spending a control spell with no punish ready.
- Using a Spirit on a boss that is already sliding out of range.
- Transforming after an early mistake instead of resetting the attempt.
- Saving every resource until the fight ends with all meters unused.
FAQ
Can I combine all three?
Yes, when the phase matters enough. A strong chain is spell control, Spirit conversion, then transformation for the next phase, not three buttons mashed into a small opening.
What should beginners learn first?
Learn one spell and one Spirit. Add transformation timing after you can explain when the first two resources are supposed to be used.
How do I improve resource use?
Assign each resource a named job before entering the fight. If a resource does not have a job, save it.
