Short Answer
Your gourd setup should match the route. Use stable healing for blind exploration, targeted drinks and soaks for known bosses, and route utility only when you are farming or cleaning up items. A clever soak is not better than a heal you can safely use.
Gourds provide the sip budget. Drinks change healing and effects. Soaks add extra effects through the Brew setup. Together, they decide whether your recovery plan is simple enough to execute while a boss is moving.
Setup Priorities
Use this order for most first-playthrough routing:
- Enough sip count to learn the route or boss without panic.
- Reliable healing before narrow offensive effects.
- Status or resistance support when the chapter demands it.
- Damage or Focus support after you know the heal windows.
- Farming or item utility only during the route that needs it.
If you are dying with unused sips, the setup is not the main problem. If you are empty before the hard phase, the route, armor, and heal timing need review.
Exploration Setup
For blind exploration, keep the setup boring:
- Favor dependable healing.
- Keep one sip for the return path.
- Use soaks that help broad survival or stamina.
- Avoid effects that require risky low-health play.
- Rest at shrines to refill before pushing a new branch.
Blind routes punish complicated recovery. You do not yet know which enemy, status, or terrain problem will force the heal, so use a setup that works in many situations.
Boss Setup
For bosses, assign each sip a purpose:
- Early sip: only after a known safe retreat.
- Status sip or cure: after the boss stops pressuring, not during the hit string.
- Damage-support sip: before a confirmed burst window, not as panic recovery.
- Final sip: protect the phase you are actually trying to practice.
If the boss applies Poison, Burn, Shock, or Chill, build the setup around surviving that status first. Damage soaks are wasted if the status forces a bad drink and you get hit during the animation.
Upgrade Timing
Upgrade the gourd path when sip count or effect strength is limiting real attempts. Do not delay weapon or armor plans for a gourd upgrade that only adds comfort you do not need yet, but do not ignore gourd upgrades if every attempt is ending because the heal budget runs dry.
Shen Monkey and shrine Brew management are worth checking after major progression. New drinks, soaks, and upgrade materials can turn a hard route into a stable one without changing your whole build.
Common Mistakes
- Equipping a boss damage soak for blind exploration.
- Drinking as soon as health drops instead of waiting for a safe window.
- Forgetting to remove farming utility before a serious boss.
- Upgrading offense while the sip count is the real blocker.
- Letting too many conditional effects make the recovery plan hard to read.
FAQ
Should I optimize healing or damage?
Healing first while learning, damage after you know the safe drink and punish windows. A damage soak has value only if you survive long enough to use it.
When should I drink?
Drink after movement creates space, after a boss recovery, or during a planned reset such as Cloud Step. Do not drink into an active combo.
Do soaks matter?
Yes, but only when they match the route. The wrong soak is invisible; the right soak makes one repeated problem easier.
