Short Answer
Commander Beetle is an optional Chapter 4 boss in Temple of the Yellow Flowers, Forest of Ferocity. The boss is manageable if you do not let the followers split your attention. Use A Pluck of Many or quick area pressure to occupy the adds, then punish Commander Beetle after delayed slashes, projectile volleys, and canceled guard stances.
Route And Unlock Context
From the Forest of Ferocity shrine, follow the main path until you reach the training area with multiple followers. The encounter starts when you approach Commander Beetle, so enter with a plan for the nearby enemies rather than sprinting straight into the commander.
This fight is optional, but the Spirit is useful in Chapter 4 because it adds poison resistance when equipped. That makes it a practical cleanup target before Violet Spider, Daoist Mi, Scorpionlord, or other poison-heavy encounters.
Fight Plan
Your first job is to stop the followers from turning every heal into an interruption. If you have A Pluck of Many, cast it early so the clones draw pressure while you force damage on Commander Beetle. If you do not want to spend that mana, kite the followers into the side of the arena and use short cleaves before returning to the boss.
Commander Beetle’s own pressure is built around delayed timing. It can slash, pause, and then create a whirlwind around itself. The pause is bait. Back away instead of attacking into it, then punish after the spin finishes. When it raises a weapon and starts blocking, do not feed it free counters; use Wind Tamer, a heavy Spirit, or simply disengage until the stance ends.
Moves To Respect
- Follower swarm: the boss is much harder when every dodge ends near an add. Clear space before committing.
- Delayed dual-weapon slash: the pause before the whirlwind is not a punish window.
- Projectile spikes: keep moving laterally and roll the final volley before closing in.
- Guard stance: attacks are blocked and answered by a counter. Cancel it with a knockback tool or wait it out.
Recommended Setup
A Pluck of Many is excellent here because the followers create more trouble than the boss’s health pool. Wind Tamer, Wandering Wight, or another hard knockback can interrupt the guard stance. Immobilize is best after a projectile volley or a finished slash sequence, not while the boss is actively blocking.
If you are saving mana for Hundred-Eyed Daoist Master later, you can still win with conservative staff play: isolate, bait the delayed spin, land two or three hits, and reset.
Common Mistakes
- Ignoring the followers until they interrupt every gourd use.
- Attacking during the commander’s pause before the whirlwind.
- Hitting the raised-weapon guard stance with light attacks.
- Spending all cooldowns on adds and leaving no answer for the boss’s counter stance.
Quality Check Before You Move On
You are ready to move on when you can reach Commander Beetle one-on-one for long stretches and can identify the guard stance before you swing into it.
