Short Answer
Chen Loong is an optional Chapter 3 character boss in the shallow water near Bitter Lake - North Shore of the Bitter Lake. Beat the lightning patterns with lateral dodges, use spells while Chen Loong is grounded, then follow the Xu Dog pellet handoff to receive the Ruyi Scroll and unlock Zodiac Village access.
When This Guide Helps
Use this guide if you reached the North Shore and want the Ruyi Scroll route before pushing deeper into Chapter 3. Chen Loong is not as durable as many route bosses, but its lightning beam, charge, blast, and ground tentacle attacks can punish careless healing.
This is also one of the most valuable optional stops in the chapter. The fight itself gives materials, but the quest that follows opens a hub route with important NPC services.
Route And Unlock Context
Start from Bitter Lake - North Shore of the Bitter Lake and head into the shallow water along the shore. Approaching Chen Loong starts the fight.
After the win, Chen Loong asks for a medicine from Xu Dog. Return to Yellow Wind Ridge - Crouching Tiger Temple - Cellar, talk to Xu Dog, then bring the Special-Made Bone-Strengthening Pellet back to Chen Loong. Giving the pellet completes the handoff and grants the Ruyi Scroll, which takes you to Zodiac Village.
Core Mechanics
Chen Loong is a lightning caster with a large enough arena that you can dodge and reset instead of trading. Its dangerous attacks tend to announce themselves clearly: levitation before a beam or charge, visible charge-up before a blast, and ground pressure before tentacle sweeps.
The boss is vulnerable when grounded. That is when Immobilize, Wind Tamer, Pluck of Many, Focus spend, and Spirit damage matter. When it is airborne or charging lightning, defend first and save resources.
Moves To Respect
Respect the lightning beam. When Chen Loong rises, move laterally and prepare a clean dodge rather than healing in place.
Respect the lightning charge. The landing can add follow-up bolts in front, so do not dodge the initial dive and immediately roll back into the line.
Respect the lightning blast. If Chen Loong pauses to gather power, back out and punish after the release.
Respect the tentacles. Ground summons can sweep through players who tunnel on the boss body. If the floor starts changing, stop attacking and reposition.
Fight Plan
- Start from the North Shore shrine and enter the water with a full gourd.
- Let Chen Loong show the first lightning string before spending spells.
- Dodge sideways through beams and charges; avoid backing straight down the attack lane.
- When the boss returns to the ground, use Immobilize or Wind Tamer to hold it still.
- Use Pluck of Many early only if Chen Loong is grounded long enough for clones to connect.
- After the fight, complete the Xu Dog pellet handoff instead of leaving the quest half-finished.
Recommended Setup
Immobilize is excellent because Chen Loong is less threatening while grounded. Wind Tamer and a fast Spirit help turn a grounded window into burst. Pluck of Many is strong if you cast early and keep the boss in range of the clones.
Bring a Shock answer only if the lightning status is making mistakes snowball. Otherwise, prioritize clean dodges and a reliable gourd over swapping your whole build.
Common Mistakes
- Beating Chen Loong and forgetting the Xu Dog handoff.
- Casting major spells while Chen Loong is airborne.
- Dodging backward from lightning charge and staying in the follow-up line.
- Healing during levitation instead of after the lightning attack resolves.
- Leaving North Shore without also checking Apramana Bat if Zhu Bajie is still present.
Rewards And Why It Matters
The fight drops Yaoguai Core and Refined Iron Sand. The larger reward is the Ruyi Scroll quest route: after the Xu Dog pellet handoff, you gain access to Zodiac Village, where useful NPC services and later Yin Tiger unlocks become available.
Quality Check Before You Move On
You are ready to continue when Chen Loong is defeated, the Ruyi Scroll handoff is complete, and Zodiac Village is unlocked. If the fight is done but the scroll is missing, return to Xu Dog and finish the pellet step.
