Official videos for Black Myth: Wukong and Black Myth: Zhong Kui may share a channel and a series identity, but they do not make the same kind of promise. The December 2023 Wukong trailer put “August 20, 2024” in its title. Its description said all material was recorded on PC and combined actual gameplay with cutscenes, while also naming storefront and console targets. It belonged to a release campaign: viewers were being asked to connect a visible range of combat, creatures and locations with a dated product they could already add to a wishlist.
The first Zhong Kui teaser in August 2025 had a different job. Game Science identified it as the second Black Myth title, a single-player action RPG primarily inspired by Zhong Kui, then explicitly stated that development was early and no gameplay was shown. Its CG images established a creative premise—judgment, divided appearances, supernatural disorder and a sword-bearing figure—without defining player inputs, level structure or finished story events. Expectation came from identity and tone, not from a delivery schedule.
The August 2026 gameplay presentation moved Zhong Kui into a more observable stage. Fifteen minutes from an in-development 21:9 build show protagonist combat and parts of the story. Movement along mountain paths, travel by raft, a submerged passage, close sword exchanges, elemental effects and a named encounter can now be described as visible properties of that build. Yet the same official description warns that the final product may differ. No release date, launch-platform list, complete map, combat vocabulary or chapter structure is announced.
That contrast changes how each montage should be read. In the Wukong release trailer, variety is arranged around an explicit calendar commitment. The edit can sample distant parts of the game because its practical message is availability: this is a coming product with named destinations. In Zhong Kui, the teaser and development footage communicate direction and current implementation. Their practical message is progress made visible, not a claim that every shown element is final or that the amount of footage measures completion.
Several tempting comparisons therefore exceed the evidence. Fifteen minutes of Zhong Kui cannot prove that it will be larger, more open or further advanced than Wukong was at a comparable date. A visible sword clash does not by itself establish a universal parry system, and denser environmental detail does not establish final performance requirements. Conversely, Wukong’s dated trailer did not make every montage transition literal or guarantee that every platform configuration would look identical. Promotional confidence and design quality are different questions.
The shared series identity is still meaningful. Both games use recognizable cultural figures, compressed verse, hostile creatures and carefully staged environments to make a Black Myth world legible before all narrative context is supplied. But the official materials place viewers at different distances from the product. Black Myth: Wukong was presenting a release-bound package; Black Myth: Zhong Kui is currently presenting a direction and an evolving build. The fair comparison is not which game has “promised more,” but what category of evidence each video offers: dated delivery, declared premise or visible development. Everything beyond those categories remains an editorial hypothesis, not an official commitment.
