What Black Myth: Zhong Kui's gameplay confirms beyond its reveal teaser

A source-by-source comparison of the first CG teaser and the later 15-minute gameplay footage: what became observable, what was only expanded, and what remains unknown.

The first teaser and the later gameplay footage answer different questions about Black Myth: Zhong Kui. In August 2025, Game Science called the project the second title in the Black Myth series, a single-player action role-playing game primarily inspired by Zhong Kui. The official upload also said development was still early and that the CG teaser contained no gameplay. Its strongest evidence was therefore editorial: a title, genre, cultural point of departure and a tone built around judgment, divided appearances and uncertain moral authority. A sword, theatrical framing or supernatural imagery could announce themes, but none of them yet proved a player action or a finished plot event.

The August 2026 video changes the type of evidence. Game Science describes it as fifteen minutes of gameplay showing protagonist combat and parts of the story, captured from an in-development 21:9 build. Now we can observe bodies moving through mountain paths, water crossings, burned terrain and an underwater passage. We can see close-range sword exchanges, evasive movement, weapon contact, fire and lightning-like effects, and a large encounter carrying the on-screen name “Great Clam Sovereign.” These are visible presentation facts. They still do not publish the controller inputs, skill names, resource rules or the final balance of those systems.

The later footage also supplements the teaser without simply decoding it. The teaser presents judgment through compressed CG tableaux and verse; the gameplay footage places ambiguity inside travel, combat and companionship at human scale. Two figures move together, the camera alternates between close third-person action and wider establishing views, and environments become conditions for movement. That creates continuity in mood, but it does not confirm who every figure is, whether the same character is controllable throughout, or how the shown scenes connect in the final narrative. Similar imagery is evidence of a design conversation, not proof of a one-to-one scene continuation.

Several important blanks remain. Neither official video announces a release date, a complete cast, chapter structure, world-map format, quest system or final combat vocabulary. The phrase “protagonist combat” confirms that the later footage shows a principal playable presentation, but it does not by itself settle the protagonist’s name or every perspective the finished game may use. Cinematic cuts do not prove a seamless world, and a boss-style health bar does not explain how encounters are selected, repeated or rewarded. Because the newer upload explicitly warns that the final product may differ, even clearly visible features should be described as properties of this development build.

The most defensible conclusion is that Black Myth: Zhong Kui moved from a declared creative premise to observable game staging. The teaser confirmed what the project wanted to be; the gameplay footage confirmed that some of that direction had become movement, space and combat that could be shown running. It expanded the evidence considerably without closing the story, system or release questions. Reading the two together is useful precisely when their limits stay separate: CG establishes intention, in-development gameplay demonstrates current implementation, and everything Game Science has not named remains open.

What to watch for
  • Note the official labels: the second Black Myth title, a single-player action RPG, and Zhong Kui as its primary creative inspiration.
  • Track the recurring concern with judgment, blurred identities and the power to decide life and death.
  • Separate cinematic staging, costumes and symbolic actions from anything that would require player control.
  • Keep the teaser's explicit 'no gameplay' boundary in mind when comparing it with the later footage.

What to watch for
  • Look for the shift from a symbolic CG promise to character-scale movement, travel and combat footage.
  • Observe sword exchanges, evasion, elemental effects and the named health bar without inventing control labels or skill rules.
  • Compare the mountain path, raft, burning ground and underwater passage with the teaser's more theatrical spaces.
  • List what the footage still does not name: character identities, map structure, final chronology and release date.
