Short Answer

Celestial Medicine is for permanent account comfort, not for chasing a build video. Spend Mind Cores on the stat problem that has shown up in several attempts: health if you are dying before the lesson is clear, stamina if dodges and charged punishes collapse, mana if your plan depends on spells, and resistance only when a chapter’s status pressure keeps deciding fights.

You unlock the system through Xu Dog’s Chapter 2 questline. After that, treat every Mind Core as a decision with a job. If you cannot name the fight, route, or repeated mistake that the upgrade fixes, hold the core.

Unlock And Timing

Xu Dog first appears early in Chapter 2 near the Village Entrance route. His quest sends you after Lang-Li-Guhh-Baw, then later moves toward the Crouching Tiger Temple Cellar after the main Chapter 2 progression items are handled. Completing that route opens Celestial Medicine crafting, and later Zodiac Village centralizes Xu Dog with other upgrade vendors.

That timing matters. Before Celestial Medicine opens, focus on basic play: shrine routes, gourd use, stance comfort, and a weapon path. Once it opens, do not spend everything immediately. Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 introduce enough different pressure types that a small reserve can save you from locking every permanent point into a problem that only lasted one boss.

Upgrade Priority

Use this order unless your attempts clearly point elsewhere:

  1. Health: best when unfamiliar bosses kill you before you can study patterns.
  2. Stamina: best when you dodge well at first, then run dry before the punish.
  3. Mana: best when Immobilize, Cloud Step, Rock Solid, or Ring of Fire is part of your real plan.
  4. Defense: best when many normal hits across a chapter are forcing extra gourd use.
  5. Resistance: best when Poison, Burn, Shock, or Chill is the reason clean attempts fall apart.

Damage-minded players often underrate health and stamina because they are not flashy. In practice, both create more damage by keeping you alive long enough to use charged heavies, Spirit skills, and spells at the intended moment.

Spending Rules

Spend after a pattern repeats, not after one bad pull.

  • If three deaths happen before your first gourd use, buy survival before offense.
  • If you die with no stamina after panic dodges, buy stamina before mana.
  • If you keep reaching the hard phase but cannot cast the spell assigned to it, buy mana.
  • If a status effect forces early heals in a whole area, buy the matching resistance.
  • If only one optional boss is causing trouble, try route cleanup and medicine before permanent resistance.

The strongest spending plan is boring: one upgrade, three to five attempts, then review. Changing several stats at once makes it harder to know which choice mattered.

Resource Discipline

Mind Cores are not the same as Will. Will can be rebuilt through route loops and item sales; Mind Cores are tied to specific drops, rewards, and progression sources. That makes them much closer to weapon and armor materials than normal currency.

Before spending, check three things:

  • Does this upgrade help the next boss or route?
  • Does it support your current spells, stance, and gourd setup?
  • Would a cheaper change solve the same problem, such as a soak, medicine, Curio, or armor swap?

If the answer to the third question is yes, test the cheaper change first. Permanent stats should clean up problems that keep returning after normal loadout changes.

Common Mistakes

  • Spending every Mind Core as soon as Xu Dog offers a new option.
  • Buying resistance because a status exists, not because it is deciding attempts.
  • Treating mana as mandatory when spells are being used randomly.
  • Ignoring stamina while blaming low damage for missed punish windows.
  • Copying a stat spread built around equipment you do not have yet.

FAQ

Should I spend Mind Cores immediately?

Spend a few when the upgrade solves a repeated problem, but keep a reserve after the system opens. The next chapter may ask for a different answer.

Is health always the best first upgrade?

Health is the safest early choice, but stamina is better if you already survive hits and lose because dodges, sprints, and charged attacks empty the bar.

Should I invest in resistance?

Invest when a status effect is shaping multiple fights or a long route. Use powders, armor, drinks, and soaks first for one-off problems.
