Black Myth: Wukong’s four captains: progress is not a complete quest

Black Myth: Wukong mixes mandatory fights, an optional encounter and a corpse pickup in the prisoner’s quest. Four souls, the return and spear crafting are separate checks.

In Black Myth: Wukong, the Chapter 3 prisoner quest asks for four captain souls, but those four names do not represent four equivalent duels. The route combines compulsory fights, an optional hidden encounter and a corpse interaction, then separates the return reward from weapon crafting. Game Science’s site confirms the game’s identity, not these quest rules or our interpretation (official boundary).

Four names, different verbs

Captain Lotus-Vision is an optional hidden encounter in the Pagoda Realm, yet its soul is necessary for this quest. In 追风Gamer’s original recording, the Lotus-Vision fight appears around 00:49; after the soul, the narration explains that the purple cell seals are removed. Access to the prisoner and collection therefore overlap at one encounter (recorded access change). “Optional” means outside compulsory progression, not dispensable when completing this particular request.

Captain Wise-Voice and Captain Kalpa-Wave instead lie on the main route. PowerPyx’s independent guide distinguishes these story encounters from Lotus-Vision and the corpse pickup (route classification). Passing through the chapter may bring the player through two relevant fights, but it does not prove that every quest item has been collected.

Captain Void-Illusion makes the difference concrete. Near Longevity Road, the action is to interact with a corpse, not trigger another living opponent. Around 02:21–02:23, the Bilibili video displays the acquired soul under “要紧物事”, the key-item category—not an equippable Spirit (pickup and category). HarryNinetyFour’s original YouTube chapter at 04:26 likewise labels this step as collection, unlike the surrounding defeat steps. We checked the author’s page and chapters, not gameplay frames from that upload (limited corroboration).

A spearhead is not yet a spear

The return remains a separate action after all four souls are gathered. Around 02:58–03:01, 追风Gamer returns to the prisoner and identifies the reward as Chubai Spearhead. Around 03:07, the forge menu lists that material for Chu-Bai Spear and still requires a crafting action (hand-in and forging). An article that calls the hand-in a finished-weapon reward would collapse two visible states.

The creator’s title promotes the weapon as T0 for thrust play. That is attributed creator framing, not an objective balance classification established by this footage. Our question is how the reward is reached, not whether one build outranks all others (ranking boundary).

Black Myth Guide reads three checks here: access, collection and conversion. This is our interpretation, not a developer statement. The practical distinction is between remembering a defeated boss and confirming an acquired key item; between reaching a later shrine and delivering the complete set; between holding a component and forging equipment. In Black Myth: Wukong, the quest joins those different verbs into one checklist without making them identical (editorial reading).
